China, Law and Development: Studying the Role of Law in China's Global Development

Welcome

In the fifth and final year of the “China, Law and Development” (CLD) project, we are engaged in a variety of activities to foster international and inclusive thinking on the role of Chinese law in global development. As part of our data collection efforts, we continue to pursue fieldwork opportunities, but we are also transitioning to more workshop and publication stages of our project. First, we are holding two major conferences this year, one in Asia and the other in North America:

  • May 29 & 30, “Chinese Law and Development: Views from Asia and Beyond,” co-hosted with the Centre for Asian Legal Studies, National University of Singapore.
  • September 21 & 22, “US, China, and the Global South,” co-hosted with the Centre for the Study of Contemporary China, University of Pennsylvania.

Both will provide occasions to convene scholars from throughout the world to assess the state of the field. Second, we are working on a number of collaborative publications. We are excited to announce that, among these, A Casebook on Chinese Outbound Investment: Law, Policy, and Business, one of the first-ever sets of case studies of Chinese overseas investment and designed for teaching in law schools, business schools, and policy schools, will be published with Cambridge University Press next year. As part of our mandate to produce knowledge that is accessible to broad publics, the casebook will be published open access. Third, we are working on a number of initiatives to continue to grow the CLD network, and look forward to staying in touch with you on these developments.

Asian Journal of Comparative Law Special Issue

This Special Issue from the CLD project explores the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on Chinese overseas direct investment and the concomitant forms of capital (symbolic, social, and political). It features collaborative research and writing by early career experts from around the world and examines how China, its trade partners, and transnational orders have responded to the pandemic through law and regulation across an array of fields: dispute resolution, legal services, immigration law and policy, digital surveillance, global health governance, and democratic fragility.
