On 28 June 2022, Professor Matthew Erie participated in the official launch of the Great Britain China Centre (GBCC) report “China and Global Legal Norms.” The GBCC is a public body under the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) that promotes legal and judicial dialogue between China and the UK. The GBCC commissioned Professor Erie to author a report to understand how China is shaping global legal norms, with a particular focus on international economic law and private international law, and given China’s growing footprint in global governance, how UK stakeholders can best engage with Chinese counterparts on matters pertaining to the UK’s interests. The report sets an agenda for engagement over the mid-term. The report features a foreword by Sir Jeffrey Jowell KCMG QC, who also attended the launch. The event was additionally attended by members from the FCDO, Ministry of Justice, UK Supreme Court, UK embassy in Beijing, other civil servants, think tanks, and NGOs.
