The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars' Asia Program, in conjunction with the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States, operates the Wilson China Fellowship in support of policy-oriented academics with specialization in political, social, economic, security, or historical issues related to China. The Fellowship program supports a rising generation of American scholars dedicated to exploring every facet of U.S.-China relations and the rise of China.

The 2022-23 Fellows, including Professor Matthew Erie, presented their projects at the recent third annual Fellowship Conference and discussed key policy issues with program alumni and other experts.

Professor Erie spoke about his latest research which assesses the implications of Chinese law and development on U.S. Rule of Law programs by asking the following questions:

  • What is the role of law in China’s global development?
  • What are the implications for this role for host states, including low-income and middle-income countries?
  • What does China’s approach to law mean for the U.S. and its legal assistance programs in those states?
