Aziz Ismatov is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Asian Legal Exchange (CALE) at Nagoya University in Japan. He also serves as a part-time lecturer of law at the Aichi Prefectural University in Japan. Aziz is a former visiting scholar at Melbourne Law School (Australia) and an alumnus of Harvard Law School (Global Scholars Academy). He received his doctoral degree in law (LL.D.) from Nagoya University.
Aziz’s research and publications center specifically on public law issues in a post-socialist or post-colonial transition context. In his recent co-edited book ‘Dynamics of Contemporary Constitutionalism in Eurasia: Local Legacies and Global Trends (Berlin, 2022), he discusses constitutionalism and human rights challenges in Central Asia through the lenses of cognitive constitutionalism. Currently, he is participating in several research projects, including with the National University of Singapore, Melbourne Law School, and Institute for East European Law Munich.
Aziz currently serves as an editorial board member of the Asian Law Bulletin (Japan) and Korea Journal of Law and Legislation (Rep. of Korea). He is a principal investigator of the research grant project – ‘Evolution of Human Rights, Democracy, and the Rule of Law in Uzbekistan in light of International Legal Aid’ sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. In 2022, Dr. Ismatov also won a grant from Egusa Foundation for International Cooperation in the Social Science to promote legal assistance research in Asia.
